The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
“Beyond these woods, do you see those two little hills? My
house is right between them. You’d love it there Edmund, it has whole
rooms simply stuffed with Turkish Delight!” ~ White Witch
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe tells the story of 4 ordinary children who are transported, though a wardrobe, to a magical land called Narnia. There; they help the talking lion, Aslan, battle the evil White Witch and save the land from an eternal winter.
This is by far one of my all time favorite movies. Yes, I love the book too, but the movie version really had me hooked.
First, theres a magic box that serves as a portal to another world. Let’s be honest; anything that has magic and/or a portal pretty much gets my attention. Then there’s talking animals. uh, James McAvoy as a half human half fawn = Best. Pet. Ever. Throw in a little Good vs Evil, ’cause I do loves me an epic battle and top it all off with Turkish Delight! Awesome, right?
Did you hear me say it has Turkish Delight?
It’s so good that the White Witch tempts young Edmund with just a little taste of it. Hey Edmund, I get it, it’s a tough call. Betray your family or get a room stuffed with soft, fruity, jello-ish squares made with freshly squeezed blood orange juice that have been rolled in powdered sugar.
The struggle is real.
I strongly suggest you betray whatever plans you had for today. Instead you should make this Blood Orange Turkish Delight, and then eat it whilst watching The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It’s what I plan to do.
Blood Orange Turkish Delight
Makes about 3 pieces (depending on how large you cut them)
Ingredients:
1 2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 cups of water divided
4 – 1oz packets of unflavored gelatin
2/3 cup corn starch
¼ cup powdered sugar
Zest of 1 blood orange (about 1tbsp)
Juice of 2 blood oranges (about ¼ cup)
1 tsp orange extract
¼ tsp fresh ground nutmeg
2-3 drops of red food color (I used AmeriColor Super Red)
Directions:
- In a medium sauce pan combine granulated sugar, 1 ¼ cup of water and blood orange juice. Stir over low heat until sugar has dissolved, then bring to a gentle boil.
- In a small saucepan whisk together gelatin, ½ cup of cornstarch, and ¾ water.
- Stir over low heat until the gelatin has dissolved.
Add the gelatin mix to the sugar and blood orange juice mix and simmer until it has thickened, stirring occasionally. This should take about 20 minutes.
- While you mixture is simmering, lightly grease an 8×8 inch square pan and then line it with plastic wrap. Mix together remaining cornstarch and powdered sugar and lightly coat the plastic wrapped pan. Save the extra powdered sugar/cornstarch for coating the Turkish delight.
- Once your gelatin mix has thickened,
- remove from heat and stir in the orange extract, orange zest, nutmeg and food color. Pour into prepared pan, spread so that its level, and chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours, or overnight.
- Cut into squares and roll them around in the remaining powdered sugar/cornstarch mixture.
- Store in an airtight container, separated by layers of parchment paper, for up to a week.
