Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 1 Episode 7 – The Hub
Simmons: “I made you this, its your favorite sandwich, prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella”
Fitz: “with your homemade pesto aioli?”
Simmons: “just a hint”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D started in Sept of 2013 as a way of continuing the already expansive Marvel universe. What we thought was his tragic death in the Avengers movie was really just the beginning of his new story. Phil Coulson not only lives, but has his own team of agents that help protect the world from unexplainable danger. Taking on organizations like HYDRA and dealing with inhumans is no easy task and this team has been torn apart and rebuilt more than once over the course of two years (has it really only been two years? Dang. so much goes down in each episode that it feels like longer). However there’s always one thing that remains certain, they will survive. They will continue to fight, no matter how great the threat, because they are a team. And more importantly, though often challenged, they are friends.
There is really no greater proof of that friendship than the connection of Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, commonly referred to as FitzSimmons. In a word, they’re adorable. Oh sure, they are often seen bickering like an old married couple but I suspect that their feelings are deeper than they admit. After all, she did make him his favorite sandwich. Twice! For his first field mission in season 1, and again when he “left S.H.I.E.L.D” in season 2 in search of Coulson. And nothing says “I like you” more than a hint of homemade pesto aioli.
I mean, anyone can throw a sandwich together and slap on boring old mayo. But what does that say? Nothing. *Crickets*. But Homemade Pesto Aioli? Thats a condiment that says you care. Add his favorite proscuitto and mozzarella and now its really talking. It says “hey, thanks for saving my life, please dont die out there, I cant wait until you come back, I love you.” Its a very chatty sandwich.
The FitzSimmons Sandwich with homemade Pesto Aioli
1 Baguette style bread loaf, sliced lengthways
1/2 lb of buffalo mozzarella sliced
1/2 lb prosciutto sliced thin
Fresh Basil leaves
Pesto Aioli – just a hint
Directions:
- I think we all know how to make a sandwich but just incase – spread ‘just a hint’ of the pesto aioli on bottom inside of the bread, layer with prosciutto, mozzarella, fresh basil, top with other half of bread
Homemade Pesto Aioli
Ingredients:
2 egg yolks a room temperature
Juice from 1/2 a lemon (about 1/4 cup)
2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup pesto of your choice (I use the stuff in a jar, that you find in the pasta isle)
- In a food processor combine egg yolks, lemon juice and pesto until well mixed
- With the food processor still running, pour in the olive oil in a slow and steady stream until the mix is fully emulsified.
- Transfer aioli to an air tight container and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks
